Valis Areloth is a hard-working and ambitious mer. Since he was young, he has always been treated responsibly, and expected to work hard to get things done. As Valis Areloth, he is a charming and clever playboy, seemingly desiring something that others could never find out without speaking to him at an intimate level. He isn't much of a speaker, and often negotiates and converses with others privately. The usual expression on his face makes him appear as though he carries a lot of weight on his shoulders, and despite that, he keeps himself feeling well - making him an emotional strong individual. Since people don't really see Valis in action as a CEO & President, they simply assume he has an even more ambitious and calculating side to himself due to the large amount of landholdings he has all throughout Tamriel, and his vast riches. Valis is incredibly inventive, and is often found thinking outside of the box - like every exceptional inventor should. He keeps his office and crew clean and organized, and admires scenery more often then not on his travels. He has a very open mind.
As Aren Lorethi, he is a cold-blooded killer, with a clearly sharp gaze. Often resorting to his more rational side of the brain, he rarely lets emotions interfere with getting his job done as Listener of the Dark Brotherhood. This isn't to say he isn't a sinister and even sadistic mer; he is... Very much so. He revels in the pain and agony of others, and often encourages them to embrace such pain, and use it to make oneself a stronger individual - if they aren't his target. He is praised for his ability to pick up on things with ease, and be creative in combat against other, noteworthy foes. A natural at the strategies, tactics and politics of warfare - he has proven to be an invaluable aspect of the Dark Brotherhood and their progress on Tamriel. Another prominent trait of Aren Lorethi, is his seemingly indomitable will and undying loyalty to the Night Mother and the Dark Brotherhood. Basically, if the Night Mother wants a job done, she has full faith that Aren Lorethi is capable of getting it done - otherwise, he wouldn't have been chosen as the Listener.
Between the two, Valis is extremely careful about being private in between his alter-egos. He only uses public transportation while in his CEO persona, otherwise, he keeps his affairs within the Dark Brotherhood extremely private. For example, the only entrances down into the underworks of his castle are hidden in strategical positions that only he'd grant himself access to, and with high security. Not even a fly could infiltrate these areas without being seen. His identity as Valis Areloth to the Dark Brotherhood remains secretive, but, the higher-ups are able to assume that the Listener is in fact Valis Areloth. Outside of the Brotherhood, no one knows a thing about his identities - it would take quite a lot of time and dedication to really find Valis Areloth out, if it were even a possibility. Quantity: 2 History & RP-SampleBirthplaceBlacklight, Morrowind BiographyYouth & Rise to Prominence- Spoiler:
Valis has been a hard-worker since day one. His parents raised him as such so that he'd have the right mind to really achieve his goals and get things done - afterall, they modeled the way he grew up by the way they were raised on Vvardenfell. Their hard work paid off when they were able to start their own business selling rare artifacts - often Dwemer in origin. Their business grew and developed into a company; a new adversary for businesses already afforded by other factions, mainly House Hlaalu and House Dres. These two Houses never acted early, underestimating the newbie. They suffered for it, when "Dwemeris Works" was posted on signs throughout all of Vvardenfell and even parts of the mainland of Morrowind.
In their beach house along one of the remote isles of Zafirbel Bay, Valis's parents were attacked. Valis's parents were murdered when he was only 14. Before the assailant could escape, Valis reached for his father's crossbow, and fired a single, enchanted bolt at his parent's murder, and ended his life with a lethal shot to the back of his head. He confiscated a contract signed by House Dres on the body, and later found out that the Camonna Tong had been affiliates of House Hlaalu - he hated these Houses for this tragedy.
At age 14, Valis was too young to live on his own, and was thus taken in by a House Telvanni magister. He spent quite a few years in Sadrith Mora, as the apprentice of Divayth Fyr. Though Valis proved more of a technologically-oriented person, instead of a magically-inclined Dunmer. Divayth Fyr had vast knowledge of alchemy and Dwemer history and technology. His teaching proved essential for Valis's future. He was able to learn how to create Divayth Fyr's legendary cure corpus disease potion, and was also able to meet the last of the Dwemer, Yagrum Bagarn. It was in this tower that Valis was given the chance to learn everything he could about the Dwemer, from a Dwemer. All the while, he was able to master Alchemy at an early age under the tutelage of Divayth Fyr. He received a minor knowledge on combat, but, learned a lot about the Dwemer's means of combat, which were often their own mechanization's.
Around the young age of 102, Valis Areloth entered the political arena of mercantilism. When he first entered the game, he wanted to "resurrect" the Dwemeris Works - his parent's business. No one took Valis very seriously, especially because of his young age. He was well-liked by the public, and Dwemeris Works wasn't as difficult to bring back as hard as it was for his parents to start from nothing. He made a few friends, and openly invested in a few minor shops - this would prove essential to his rise to power.
At age 105, Valis held the Conference of Houses, and it was here that he was able to meet their respected leaders. When he looked into the eyes of the House Dres and House Hlaalu heads, he could immediately tell that they would do all in their power to crush his rise to power. He was young and disliked by many since he represented an unorthodox threat to their culture. In general, he just wanted to get to know his enemies - and this proved to be a simple task since the Houses already had resentment toward one another. It was difficult to get them all together, but, they wanted their debates and arguments to be heard by their rivals, they could've cared less about Valis's own interests in the meeting - he was currently insignificant to the vast majority of them.
So, the game of chess began. With every move he made, it was always either House Hlaalu or House Dres that would try to oust his prosperity. It wasn't until a representative of the Empire was invited into Valis's financial affairs, and legalized his trade of Dwemer artifacts; he was now supported by the Offices of Imperial Commerce. From there, he was able to make a monopoly of Dwemeris artifacts, this gave him a lot of unique business opportunities - he invested quite a lot of money. The businesses he invested in became popular enough that their owners wanted to affiliate themselves with "Dwemeris Works" and eventually, he paid the business owners off, taking more for himself.
An agent of the Camonna Tong tried to assassinate Valis, but, he didn't even reach him in enough time - and was shot dead. It turned out that this Camonna Tong Strongman was in fact the young brother of the man he killed at age 14 - what a prolonged grudge this boy must've held toward him. He used this Camonna Tong Strongman to exploit House Hlaalu, weakening the House's political prestige dramatically, and knocking them out of the game. Now it was a heated match between House Dres and Dwemeris Works. They fought for control in various cities on the mainland. For quite a long time, it was "underground information" that House Dres had been pressuring the local businesses in Blacklight to give into their political influence. Portraying the hero, Valis was able to exploit this in Blacklight, and thus ultimately won against House Dres, and his place in Blacklight.
Sanguine, my brother...- Spoiler:
Now, in a position of power, he stood strong with total economic control over Morrowind. He knew who traded, where they traded, monitored imports and exports, etc... The Empire thought he was their property, but, he had used his power to prevent their control more then once. Basically, all trade was monopolized by Dwemeris Works - he knew he'd have to change the name of his thriving company, but, he would wait when the time was right.
For a temporary amount of time, Valis became a prized member of the Mages Guildhall located in Mournhold. He had a manor in Godsreach that served as his home. It was here that he refined his alchemical knowledge and picked up on the history of magic in Tamriel - which he found fascinating. Valis got in a relationship with a Dunmer woman named Ora Grethel, who was actually supposed to evaluate him for a visit to the Arcane University centered in the Imperial City.
When Valis's inquisitive nature got the best of him, he started experimenting with some pretty potent poisons; he was found out by none other than his girlfriend, Ora. When she discovered this, she knew that she could never endanger the Arcane University with his presence, and had to decide whether or not to kill her boyfriend. She hoped that his curiosity would only last for so long, but, he only advanced his potions more - she needed to stop him before he could really do something to harm those around them. She resolved by attacking him before his creations could come to fruition.
Valis turned out to be a few steps ahead of her, and had already poisoned her. By the time she decided to strike, her body was totally weak, and her concentration was dismantled so she couldn't use her magic skillfully. She fell into his arms, and Valis apologized - it was his first murder, but, he couldn't let his girlfriend get in the way of his genius. These poisons would've been tested on the poison-resistant races of Tamriel, for the better of merkind - he intended to better the genetics of his fellow mer, but, he had to test the effects of his poisons on others first. The Dark Brotherhood took notice of this murder, but, since he was in such a high place, he couldn't be reached.
No one knows the results of his tests, but, he was never found out since the Empire had little jurisdiction in Mournhold - he left the mages guild just a couple years later. When he realized that the Dark Brotherhood had been tracking him, he scavenged for all the research he could find on the Dark Brotherhood, and eventually hired a group of agents to find the Brotherhood out. Apparently, the Brotherhood found them, and killed them - so, Valis knew where to look. When he found the Dark Brotherhood they were cautious of his presence; they knew not to underestimate him for his outward appearance. He introduced himself as Aren Lorethi. They greeted him, and one of them spoke up. He was dressed in a black cloak. This cloaked figure who was later discovered to be a Speaker of the Dark Brotherhood, attempted to recruit Valis, and admitted that they knew of his murder. He was given an assignment to prove his worthiness. The Speaker said he'd come to him after the assignment was completed.
His assignment was to isolate and assassinate a guardswoman in Tear. He wasn't appreciated in Tear as much as other places... So, he had to go under a different guise. He was able to isolate the guardswoman at night using his charm, and then he killed her silently. Afterward he escaped to a camp he made a few miles away. There he was confronted by the same speaker, and told what sanctuary he'd be going to, and how to get there. Chosen by the Blackest of Hearts- Spoiler:
Over the years (nearly a century) he had risen up in the ranks. He had seen old members die, and new members take their place - and attained some wisdom from these experiences. His loyalty to the Dark Brotherhood was incredible. Throughout the course of several missions he had probably killed over 500 people in a variety of clever and creative ways. He also obtained riches, and kept his company up-to-date, remaining a bother to his rivals extensively. He was capable of balancing his two lifestyles effectively.
Later, he found himself being elected by the likes of a Speaker of the Dark Brotherhood. He became one of 5 Silencers of the Dark Brotherhood. Eventually, he and his speaker (an Imperial) got romantically involved, and this romance became love. Her name was Christa Carpalus. To Valis's luck, his lover was also the CEO & President of the East Empire Company. They went on many missions together, and after careful planning, became publicly involved. In the black courier they were known as the "Imperial Economists" since they were both exceptionally brilliant individuals when it came to currency. They would frequently complete contracts together - very high-ranking ones - though recruitment for the Dark Brotherhood was lacking in more areas then one.
Later, the two got married, and Christa became pregnant. Her activities were lessened when the Dark Brotherhood found this out, but, they still urged her to recruit for the family - and she did so. On one of her missions, she approached a would-be Murderer of the Dark Brotherhood, but, it turned out to be an illusion, and before she could react appropriately, 6 hooded figures surrounded and killed her. Valis blamed himself for her death, since he always went on missions with her. He fell into a prolonged state of depression, since he not only lost his wife, but his child as well. The Black Hand could feel the coldness in his heart, and they took advantage of it, by encouraging him to take Speaker role - which he did.
As Speaker he proved to be an even greater asset to the goals of the Dark Brotherhood. He continued completing higher-ranking contracts, but, unlike his predecessor, he was able to manage recruiting equally at the same time. After his wife's death, he inherited all of the East Empire Company, as well as its landholdings, and his company spread far and wide, especially in the east of Tamriel. He changed his company's name to Cardinal Empire Company, and had monopolies over a variety of trades, feeding his empire with an insurmountable amount of money.
As time passed on, Valis finally elected a Silencer. She was a female Imperial, like his wife, and though she was interested in being with Valis, he ultimately decided that she was too young, and that it wouldn't work out due to the correlation between her and the memories of his dead wife. Still, they followed up on missions together, and for a while were successful. Their greatest rival was perhaps the Morag Tong, who the Dark Brotherhood fought with frequently - the majority of the missions he gave to his Silencer, and that they did together were missions combating the Morag Tong. After a few years, she became a Speaker herself, and it was around this time that the Night Mother called upon Valis.
For nearly three hundred years, Valis proved to be a vital brother in his dreadful family, and for nearly three hundred years he only furthered their progression tenfold. After the listener grew too old, and fell deathly ill, it was obvious who the Night Mother would elect. So, then it happened... Valis became the one and only Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, and reported to his mother weekly.
Also around this time, one of Valis's distant cousins, Gren Kilaz had challenged the throne of the Count of Blacklight. Valis took advantage of this, and approached his cousin with a hundred times more support then anyone could even think of giving to the Count. The people were won over, by Valis's enigma, and they all supported the overthrow of the Count. When Gren was in place, he was dead 49 nights later. Valis took the throne, claiming relation to Gren and the people supported him wholly. Now he was not only the Listener of the Dark Brotherhood, but the Count of Blacklight and had an army to defend his Valis-persona. Present Day- Spoiler:
Since his assumption to the throne he has been granted access into higher circles then ever before; even having visitation rights into the Imperial Palace. He travels all over Tamriel because A: he has the money to afford it and B: so that he can expand his working space in the west as well. As Listener he tends to his duties, and his family members with new contracts; some of which he chooses to complete on his own. RP Sample-- | |
